Katei Taki Galleries

Katei (1830-1901) was a painter who also published some of his art in woodblock-printed picture books. The titles of two of these books are shown below. Click on a book's title to see its pictures. Katei's style was influenced by the Chinese painter Shen Nanpin who introduced a new style of Chinese art to the Japanese during his visit to the city of Nagasaki in the 1730s. Unlike earlier styles, objects were not outlined in black to make them look more realistic.
